driving around the dumpsite near mile 10 in Donna
looking for this house i heard for rent
i say i can’t smell it -
can’t ever really smell anything & the kids will get used to it
leaving a house w/ fields all around & afraid
that the spraying in the water will in years
show up in medical tests, & I circle around
streets these are our worries,
not thinking.
so yeah when you mention the plastics
or the teflon pan i’m not supposed to be using
on the stove i don’t even have
i laugh in your face.
& when you subtly ask what my summer plans are,
i know you’re thinking where my kids gonna be.
as if
i don’t think about it 24/7.
as if
i need reminding
yeah

Audre Lorde
We can learn to work and speak when we are afraid in the same way we have learned to work and speak when we are tired. For we have been socialized to respect fear more than our own needs for language and definition, and while we wait in silence for that final luxury of fearlessness, the weight of that silence will choke us.
